Bridgeton Covered Bridge Fund

bridgeton_bridge.jpg (14798 bytes)Make this beautiful old covered bridge YOUR bridge. Your donation to the bridge fund will help to preserve and maintain this historic bridge for future generations to enjoy, and you can feel proud that you had a part in it. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

The Bridgeton Covered Bridge Association was named caretaker for the bridge in September 1997 by the Parke County Commissioners. The bridge was built in 1868 by J. J. Daniels and is of Burr Arch construction. It was bypassed in 1967 after 99 years of faithful service and is therefore no longer a part of the highway system. While there is a covered bridge fund it can't cover all 32 bridges so some bridges need special friends to take care of them.

We consider it a privilege to take care of our bridge and we are thankful for the generous people who have come to our assistance. The Parke County Highway Department did repairs with lumber donated by the Pike Lumber Co. The bridge was painted in 1999 with paint donated by Sherwin Williams. Wal-Mart provided a place for us to have bake sales and car wash and gave us matching grants. The eyebrows were repaired in 2000 with help from Parke County, Inc. And we are grateful for the many people who have made donations. Our next project is repairing minor structural damage before it becomes major. And when you are over 100 years old there are many things that need to be done to keep you looking your best.

Friends of the Bridgeton Milldam

The old milldam needs a helping hand. It has deteriorated to the point where we are in danger of losing it. The covered bridge, mill and dam are what makes Bridgeton unique and makes it a favorite spot with the visitors. The early dams at Bridgeton were made of wood. A major step was taken in 1913-1916 when the dam was cemented. That's a long time ago. It's time to take another step! Friends of the Bridgeton Milldam is a newly formed organization that is preparing to do just that, but due to the extensive work needed to repair the dam, we need help.

1. After the flood of 1957, when the turbulent waters  receded it had destroyed nearly 40 feet of the dam's top cap.

2. The many leaks in the dam  continue to cause rapid erosion.

3. Large chunks of the outer surface fall into the creek. Immediate attention is necessary to preserve the dam before it becomes  irreparable.

TO BECOME A FRIEND OF THE DAM

The dues are $10.00 per person per year. Donations are also welcome They are NOT tax deductible.

The dam is a part of the mill property and is therefore privately owned, it is a part of the National Register Historic District and is important to Bridgeton's heritage, as is the mill. The owner is working hard trying to preserve and restore the mill but needs help with the dam.
